Product Review

Now that I’ve had my toy for a couple days, I figured I’d give a review. You can see a picture in the previous post.

My initial reaction was “Wow…sexy! But it’s heavy…” I don’t really know how heavy these types of things are supposed to be. It’s not real heavy, just more than I expected. The design is nice, there are only 10 buttons on the whole thing that perform 5 actions, so it’s pretty intuitive. I like that you can’t do much with it. It’s a music player, and if you want, you can record a voice memo. That’s it. Nothing else to worry about. Very chic.

The first thing to do is load music. I’m a little disappointed that you need external software to add stuff. In my ideal world, it would work just like a normal USB drive…plug it in and it’s good to go. But everything has a driver, so it’s not that big a deal. The player comes with MusicMatch Jukebox to help you manage the songs, but you don’t need to install it. It also comes with Dell DJ Explorer, which is kind of like a plugin to Windows Explorer. Installing this driver allows you to treat the DJ like another hard drive in that you can drag and drop music. So that’s handy and doesn’t have overhead (like MM does). If you have your music separated into genres on your computer and want to keep them separated as such, I would recommend starting with your largest genre and making a playlist for it. Then do the rest. You’ll see what I mean if you keep reading.

Playing the music is as easy as hitting the button. Like I said before, the controls are very simple to use. Forward, back, play/pause, and a scroll barrel get you around the most. I particularly enjoy the barrel. There’s a “back” button, like in a browser, and a “home” button to make menu navigation pretty intuitive and easy to get used to.

I don’t have any, but I know there are a lot of peripherals for this device, and some of them are pretty nifty. You can get an FM transmitter to use in the car, an arm band to strap on when you run, and a few carrying/protective case options. I will be checking them out shortly.

One feature that I would like to see is the ability to use folders. When I copied all my music from my computer to my DJ, I figured it would keep the folder structure and I would be able to play, say, my Christmas folder. But none of my music was in a Christmas folder. I had to go through all nearly 1000 songs and add them to a Christmas playlist (which would have been simple if not for the 500 non-Christmas songs I had already copied over). Folders would be a very nice addition. Once you have music that on your PC is in different playlists, it’s pretty much a hassle to get those back. I will change my mind if there’s a utility to convert your PC playlist to a DJ playlist. That would be a great mod to make.

The only real complaint I have is that Dell took a really long time to get this product ready, and then an even longer time to get it to me. The ship date when I ordered was November 24th. Close to that time I got an email from Dell saying that the shipping was delayed and would ship on or before December 3rd. Around December 2nd I got another email saying that shipping was delayed more, to the 10th, and that due to FTC rules I had to confirm that date with Dell or they would cancel my order. I’ve never heard of that rule, and I think it’s dumb. At any rate, I sent them a nice little email about how this was the second product I ordered from them in a year that they delayed shipping for more than 2 weeks and that I would be reconsidering ordering from Dell again. They sent me an email back apologizing for the inconvenience and said they’d send me the DJ as soon as they could. Two days later, there it was.

It seems like this was one of the last Dell DJ15s sold, because when I ordered it it was no longer on the website (but had been the day before), and the guy I talked to at Dell said it was the last day this product would be offered. A few days later I found out that the Gen2 DJs were coming out very soon. For a first generation mp3 player, this DJ rocks. I’m sure the Gen2s are much better, and I know they’re sexier. At this point, all you can get are a 5GB mini-DJ and a 20GB DJ. I say go for the 20, but wait til Spring to see if the $250 price tag comes down. Still, that price is not bad at all for the product. It sure beats the $400 for an iPod (which I would still love to have, so if your a philanthropist send me an email).

My New Toy

Dell DJ15I have been waiting for this day for quite some time.

I’ve always considered myself a wannabe innovator. I’m definitely not an early adoptor either. I think it’s because of money. If I had more money, I would be more of an early adoptor. But I found a deal a few weeks ago on my very first mp3 player. Well, that’s not true. It’s my first non-disc mp3 player. It’s a Dell DJ15. 15GB of hard drive in a sexy case for cheap. They delayed shipping for ever, but it finally showed up at my door yesterday. It’s pretty sweet.

A Month Later…

So the tank has been set up for exactly a month. In it is now about 15 lbs live rock, 15 snails of various types (astrea and nassarius), and 2 peppermint shrimp (although I haven’t seen them in a couple days). The caulerpa I added quickly takes over and needs to be pruned every couple weeks. The corals I added are doing well.

With the rock, I got a couple interesting things. The first thing I saw that seemed alive scared the whatnot out of me. It was in a large hole in the rock, and it looked like one of those water mines, except it was brown. This was when it was still in the box before I added it to the tank. I was at an LFS and saw one and I found out it is a pencil urchin. It took 3 weeks for him to come out of hiding, and when I got back from my Portland trip I saw him coming to the front.

There are also a handful of anemones, 2 brittle stars, some type of mollusk, other types of snails, an unknown hairy-legged crab, at least one type of tube coral (3 colonies that I can see), like 10 feather dusters, and a few other unknown items. I’m hoping they will develop more so I can tell what they are.

So far, the only type of fish I’m sure I want is a pajama cardinal. Possibly a 6 or 4 line wrasse too. But no fish for at least another month.

The news of the day is my cyanobacteria bloom. I came home from Portland and couldn’t see through most of my tank walls. There was a nice thick carpet of the stuff on the sand too. I’m not sure how it happened so quickly (I was only gone for 4 days), but I have to take care of that. I’m going to try to let it run its course while doing water changes and sucking some of the stuff out. I hear this is a natural occurrence, but it’s sure annoying. It’s growing on everything.

Wow…

I was at my first frag swap tonight. I heard about it on Reef Central. My tank’s only been up for a week and a half, and I have more live rock coming on Wednesday, so I wasn’t going to buy anything. They had a raffle, and I didn’t even put my name in for the live stuff. But when I was leaving, I got talking to people about my tank and they started giving me stuff. By the time I left, I had a small colony of pink button polyps (Zooanthus sp.) about the size of a 50 cent piece, a small orange Montipora digitata (an sps coral), and a quarter-sized piece of purple xenia (Xenia elongata). Pics forthcoming.

Parameters before adding livestock:
Ammonia – .25 (not sure about that, but that’s what it says)
Nitrite – 0
Nitrate – 5

I need to get a refractometer. And a calcium test.

This thing gets expensive quickly!

I just dropped some money on 10 lbs live rock from Liverocks.com. They’re going to send me 5 lbs Keys and 5 lbs Gulf rock. I hear that’s a good combination to have. LR.com is a really great retailer, and everyone on Aquarium Advice who has purchased rock from them says it’s the best rock they’ve had. I’ll talk more about it when it comes. They aren’t making any more shipments until the 15th, and I told them to send mine on the 16th so I can be home when it arrives.

I also purchased 10 nassarius and 5 astrea snails. I found out after I bought them that the astreas can’t right themselves if they get flipped over, so I probably won’t get them anymore. Next week-ish I’ll pick up some peppermint shrimp, and we’ll see what I get from the live rock in terms of crabs. Usually crabs can be found hitch-hiking in the rock because it’s pulled straight from the ocean farms and shipped. There could be lots of goodies in there. I think I want some scarlett crabs and a couple scarlett-tipped crabs. And then…the fish!

Time for a Pic

nano reef, week 1 - click the image to see a larger pictureI took a pic of the reef last night. In the photo, the lights are strictly from the tank itself. Right now there are only 2 pieces of live rock in the tank, but I will be getting more in a week or so (I have to pay some bills first). I may be getting a fish today (perhaps a yellow goby) and perchance a snail or shrimp. I want something that will sift through the sand. Let me know if you have any ideas.

The Time Has Finally Come

Well, I finally got my reef set up last night. Here are the specs:

  • 10 gallon tank
  • 20lbs live sand
  • 4.5 lbs live rock (For now. I plan on getting 10 more lbs after I pay some bills)
  • 2 springs of calopra
  • 2x48W daylight/actinic PC light with lunar light

Right now it’s running off the old Whisper filter and heater I have, but I’m getting a protein skimmer and titanium heater to replace them next week or so. I’m scared to death that the electrical system can’t handle it, or that the tank will collapse the countertop it’s on. I just need to pray for it constantly. Pics will be forthcoming.

Photography Project

I picked up a couple new Angels today and I decided I wanted to take some photos. I experimented with flash and zoom settings, and I found out things I did not know. First, flash photos produce crisper pictures, and it’s usually closer to what it really looks like than just using the tank light. Second, it’s *really* hard to take pictures of moving fish.

Here is a little breakdown of what I was able to come up with. Take a look at these photos and guess which was flash and which isn’t (click ‘em to see the big one).

algae eater flash algae eater no flash

The one on the left was taken with a flash, and the one on the right was without flash. These are the original photos. Initially, the flash one is much better.

After some Photoshopping, here is what was produced:

algae eater flash algae eater no flash

What’s kind of odd is in the doctored non-flash image, the lighting looks more natural and reflects what the tank looks like. However, the doctored flash image shows better what the fish looks like. I’m sure it has something to do with the wood he’s chillin’ under. At any rate, this was just my first experiment, and there will be more pictures and experiments and different cameras, so expect to see more posts like this.

And if you’re interested, the camera I used was an Olympus Stylus 400 digital camera with built-in flash. I also used a tripod.

The rest of my photos can be seen at my Aquarium Advice gallery.

Fall Back

picture from my desk...so prettyI always feel lonely around this time of year. I love Fall; the air is crisp, the trees are beautiful, winter is on the way. When I see the marvelous colors, feel the almost-cold wind on my face while the rest of my body is warm, for some reason I become very interested in sharing my marveling with someone. Not anyone in particular, just someone. It only gets more intense as the Christmas season approaches, with the lights and trees and celebration. It goes away around February, but for the next two months, if you catch me zoned out, just snap me out of it.

The picture to the right was taken from my desk window. Click it to see the large version (200k).

Finally

I’m finally taking the plunge; I’m setting up a reef! Actually, just a 10 gallon nano reef, but a reef nonetheless. I’m checking out the lighting first, and I may get some rock and sand. I need to do some more research on when to add rock and stuff, but I found a great fish store near my office that I can buy mixed water from. I’m going to get my rock from LiveRocks.com I think. Not sure what I’m going to get livestock-wise, but I’ll figure it out. I’ll be posting pics and stuff. I’m pretty excited about it. Stay tuned!
