I Exuberate Fantastikisms

Posted by admin on Jun 29 2006 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

The title has very little to do with the post. I heard it on TV and thought it was hilarious (mostly because the dude definitely did NOT “exuberate fantastikisms”).

I have two prayer requests. The first is for a friend who is going through some difficult times in her pregnancy. As of today, she’s about 27 weeks pregnant, and there are some serious complications. Let’s just say things aren’t where they should be, and the doctors are probably going to take the baby out soon. Right now it’s too early, but they’re keeping her in the hospital until they think it’s safe to go in via cesarean section and take him out. Pray for her health and safety as well as the health and safety of the baby.

The second is less life-and-death, but still worthy of prayer. A Christian coffee shop near my office is struggling really bad. They’ve lost a lot of money, but the owner feels called to keep trusting God and keep it open. They went to court and are going to be able to stay open until October (three weeks ago they were staying open on a day-by-day basis). If you’re not really sure what separates a Christian coffee house from other coffee joints, there really isn’t a whole lot of difference. Basically from what I’ve seen the music selection is different, and this one has a small book section that has only Christian books. Plus they have musical performers, all Christian, and in general knowing the management is Christian makes me sleep better paying for coffee (and the prices seem more reasonable). The only reason they are going under is they don’t have enough for advertising so they have trouble getting the place known (it’s only been there for a year or so). It would be great if you could pray for the shop and its owners who are trying to follow a calling from the Lord even though it looks really bad right now. They’re experiencing what a heavy cross feels like.

That’s all for today.

Summer Project

More like a 3 summer project. I decided a little while ago that I wanted to visit three specific ballparks: Camden Yards, Fenway Park, and Wrigley Field.

At each of these historic fields, I am going to try to take a tour and get me some history. I hear most parks will give free tours, but if they’re not free they’re cheap. It should be really fun.

I’m starting the project this summer with Camden. I’m currently working on getting some seats on eBay (3 more hours…). If it all works, I’ll be seeing the Yankees beat the Orioles in August. Next summer is at least Fenway, but if I can do it, I’ll hit Wrigley too. Ideally the Yankees will be playing each time, but I don’t know if I want to be a Yankee fan in Fenway park…

Wanna come? Just let me know.

Redoing Stuff

Posted by admin on Jun 19 2006 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

There are a few times where I give opportunity for someone else to redo something in my house. I call it generosity, others may call it free consultation. Tomaytoes, tomahtoes. Regardless, I’m looking for a new bed set. What I want is something not blue and not boring. If you need me to get specific, my bed’s a full. We’ll start with a sheet set, but bonus points if you include a light quilt or blanket (after all, it’s summer now). Mega bonus if it has a matching window treatment.

If it matters, my bedroom is currently tan, although I have recently begun thinking about changing it.

Ready…set…go!

New Project

Posted by admin on Jun 7 2006 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

I began a new set of experiences today. I had been looking for ways to get our local youth group involved in some type of homeless service project. The one I had in mind kinda fell through, but I decided to keep pursuing opportunities. One came up in my search that intrigued me. A local shelter that houses about 40 people had just created a computer lab and was looking for someone to provide some training for the residents. I sent the contact an email asking about it, and eventually went in to meet the director and some residents. Before I left I had four students ready to start some training.

I’ll be going to Freedom House every week for about an hour, and this “session” will last about 6 weeks. Tonight was the first, and it was cool. One of the ladies has worked with computers before, but the other three seemed to be very basic. One was having a hard time clicking what she was supposed to because she just wasn’t used to a mouse. I’m pretty much letting them decide what they want to learn, and then I’ll come up with a curriculum as the weeks go on. If it works out, I may continue on with this group to more advanced stuff, or maybe we’ll start fresh with four more (they only have four computers). There were a few that stopped in showing interest while I was teaching some basic stuff.

This week we turned on the computer, opened Word, typed a sentence, opened a browser and went to Yahoo, and then shut down the computer. It took 45 minutes. Next week will be an Intro to Web Browsing, and I’ll set them up with some email. My goal is to enable them to get resumes written and sent out, and hopefully give them some experience they can use when they find a job.

Please keep this project of mine in your prayers.
