My First Game

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It’s been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

Anyone know where that’s from? It’s quite possibly the greatest baseball movie ever made! Give up? Ok, it’s Field of Dreams.

I played in my first league softball game today. My company has a team, and Bible Study hasn’t started yet, so I decided to play today because it’s possibly the only chance I’ll get. The only other chances are going to be rescheduled games. It may be kinda bad, but I’m sort of hoping for more rain delays. :)

I was in the lineup for game 2 (all of the games this year are double headers), but it started raining during game 1. The manager put me in for the guy who was leaving for game 2, and I got an at bat. I hit into a fielder’s choice, and the play was made at second. So technically I still have a 0.000 BA, however I will prefer to say I have never gotten out. Which isn’t exactly true because it’s still considered an out on me when you look at my stats, but whatever. :) It was fun, and I hope I can play agian.

In other news, some of you have noticed (well, one of you) the new widget I have on my site. I called it MeebZilla. Any time it says I’m online, start chatting with me. Occasionally I see people on my website through this thing, but only one person has ever used it. So go ahead, use it…it would be cool to know who’s on my site from time to time.

My New Favorite Baseball Player

I was listening to Focus on the Family last week and heard Albert Pujols . I didn’t know he was a Christian. What I like about his conversion is how simple it was. He met his wife-to-be, Diedre, salsa dancing, and she said up front she wanted to be serious with God. Albert went to church with her, and wondered why people were walking up the isle at the end of the services. She explained what that was, what faith in Christ means, the difference between Heaven and Hell, and all that stuff. The next time they went to church, at the end during the alter call, Albert tapped her on the arm and said “I thought we were going.” So they went. Basically, he didn’t want to go to Hell, but hearing him talk about it, it was a common sense decision for Albert to give his life to Christ. From that point, baseball took a back seat. Jesus Christ is his Lord, and everything he does in his family, his sport, his life all comes from him. Albert said “God doesn’t need me, I need Him to survive in this world…He’s the one I give all my credits, all these hohnruns..” And Albert has given a LOT of homeruns to God…

Anyway, it’s clear to me that Albert is another amazing Christian in sports, which always makes me happy to see with the sport “industry” so full of ridiculous amounts of sin. I love how God places people in all areas of existence in order to bring others to Him. Albert is an excellent (and apparently successful) witness on his team, and has led a few of his teammates to the Lord. I love it! Praise God.

Check out the Pujols’ foundation website. There’s more to these people than baseball, and God is using them in some great ways.

I love baseball!

My Favorite Celtic Band

I do enjoy me some Celtic music. Let me tell you a story. But first, my tummy decided I need to get some lunch.

…a few minutes later…

When I worked an internship in Buffalo, the guy who had occupied my desk previously left a bunch of CDs. One of them looked interesting, so I popped it in not knowing at all what to expect. What I heard was a beautiful concoction of accordian, violin, flute, guitar, tribal percussion, and voice, among other things. I think I fell in love right about then. I immediately copied the CD like the pirate I was back then.

Years later, I found a website where you paid $10 a month for as many songs as you could download (they have since changed their policy). I got curious and searched for Solas, and found a bunch of their albums. I downloaded the one I copied so it would be ligitimate (I had given up my swashbuckling ways by then) and the other three I found. They’ve since come out with two more, and they’re both on my hit list. I just have to wait until next month because I ran out of downloads.

They’re not a new band, and they may not even be around anymore except for the occasional reunion tour (their latest is a reunion album), but they’re awesome. I highly recommend them if you’re into it. To see if you are, go ahead and download the song. Don’t ask me for more songs…you’ll have to find them and buy them yourself.

My Flip Flops

havaianasThese are the best flip flops ever. I learned of them in Brazil, and they cost about $8US there. Here there are only a few retailers, and the one I found in Richmond has them for around $16. I thought that was a rip off. So one day during the Watermelon Festival I walked past Need Supply Co. and saw a bin with Havaianas with orange stickers on them. I looked and – WHOA! – on sale for $9.99! So I picked up a pair. I would have gotten them in Brazil, but I think I was the biggest guy in the whole country, and no one had them in my size. Fortunately there were a couple pairs just the right size for me. I love them and they love me.

My Lunch Hour

I do enjoy a bowl once in a while. But this weekend the bowling alley near the office has made it wonderful. We thought we were going for $0.50 games, but we got so much more. Three of us went and bowled three games each. What we also found when we got there, however, was $0.50 hot dogs and two candy bars for $1. Awesome! The most expensive part of the whole outing was the bottled water.

I hope they do this again.

My Song Of The Day

I enjoy Cole Porter’s lyricism. He’s usually very witty, albeit sometimes a little sketchy if you know his background. He’s also very poetic, and mixed with fun melodies that go all over the place, you have yourself one dandy of a song. Which fits, because he was one Dandy of a songwriter.

In The Still Of The Night
-Cole Porter

In the still of the night
As I gaze through my window
At the moon in its flight
My thoughts all turn to you

In the still of the night
All the world is in slumber
All the times without number
Darling when I say to you

Do you love me as I love you?
Are you my life to be, my dream come true?
Or will this dream of mine fade out of sight
Like the moon growing dim
On the rim of a hill
In the chill, still
Of the night
